Why Not Study Italian?
There are many reasons why studying Italian would benefit your life. Italian is, after all, a vibrant and living language, which plays a large role in both international and domestic communities world wide. Many people throughout the world speak Italian every day, at work, at home, and in class. In Italy itself, which consists of the classic boot-shaped peninsula jutting southwards into the Mediterranean sea, as well as the islands of Sicily and Sardegna, and which shares a border with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia, over 61,000,000 individuals speak the Italian language as their mother tongue, according to The World Bank. Outside of the Italian peninsula, many countries are home to first-, second-, and third-language speakers of Italian, including such countries as Switzerland, where Italian is one of the three official languages, as well as in certain Italian cultural communities throughout Europe, North America, South America, and Africa. According to Statistics Canada, 51,000 Canadians have cited Italian as the sole or primary language used at home. Just imagine the conversations you could have!
Another reason why it would be worth your while to learn Italian is employability. There are many job opportunities, right here in Canada as well as abroad, for individuals with a knowledge of the Italian language. Not only is Italian a vibrant and living language, but learning it can make you a more employable individual everywhere you go. As indicated by the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Ontario, in this province alone there are many Italian-Canadian job opportunities from a wide range of areas, from arts and culture, to sports and recreation, construction, law, food industry, information and technology, advertising and marketing, hospitality and tourism, government, automotive, and retail.
The best reason, however, for learning Italian is that it is a rich and beautiful language. Learning Italian is an incredibly rewarding experience, and this is especially the case with the Italian program in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Western University. Here we have a dedicated team of excellent professors, ready to share with you their knowledge of and passion for the language of Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, and many other iconic poets, writers and artists. With the certificate, minor, and major options, access to a program run by fantastic instructors, many compelling classes to choose from, and the whole world of Italian language, culture, history, and art to explore, there just doesn’t seem to be a reason not to study the Italian language right here at Western University.
I myself have found studying Italian at Western to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my academic and adult life. The course work is manageable and interesting, and the professors here work hard to ensure that each of their students succeeds and benefits from the Italian program. Teaching is not just an occupation for these professors, it is uno stile di vita. All of the Italian program professors are more than happy to meet any curious student with enthusiastic attention, and are available during their office hours to answer any questions you may have, whether it be about course work, grammar troubles, or simple inquiries about the Italian language, Italy, and Italian culture.
